Second HKJCGHI Co‑Directors’ Public Lecture: Advancing Pandemic Preparedness through Immunology, Outbreak Evidence, and Vaccine Innovation

29 April 2026

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Global Health Institute (HKJCGHI) hosted its second Co-Directors’ Public Lecture on 29 April 2026, attracting more than 120 participants, including around 80 onsite and more than 40 joining online. The session brought together researchers, clinicians, students, and public health professionals to examine how advances in immunology, surveillance, and vaccine research, grounded in real-world evidence, can strengthen preparedness for emerging infectious disease threats.

The lecture featured three distinguished HKJCGHI Co-Directors—Professor Ravindra Gupta (University of Cambridge), Professor Florian Marks (International Vaccine Institute), and Professor Leo Poon (The University of Hong Kong). Through case studies spanning SARS-CoV-2, mpox outbreaks, and next-generation vaccine development, they shared insights on host–pathogen interactions, evidence generation during outbreaks, and the development of broad-spectrum vaccines to inform future pandemic readiness.

Featured Talks

“Lessons on Host–Pathogen Interactions and Immunity from SARS-CoV-2 Studies” by Professor Ravindra Gupta

Professor Gupta highlighted how studies of host–pathogen interactions during prolonged SARS-CoV-2 infections offer critical insights into viral evolution, immune escape, and transmission dynamics. His presentation illustrated how immune pressure can shape viral mutations, with important implications for pandemic preparedness and future variant emergence.

“Turning Outbreaks into Evidence: Mpox Vaccine Effectiveness Research in the DRC and Madagascar” by Professor Florian Marks

Professor Marks showed how research during outbreak response can support generation of timely and policy relevant evidence during public health emergencies. Drawing on mpox vaccine effectiveness studies in the DRC and Madagascar, he highlighted how the HKJCGHI/IVI team works with partners to embed research rapidly within surveillance, vaccination, laboratory, and response systems. Each well-designed study strengthens immediate response and national systems while advancing preparedness and evidence for future outbreaks.

“Development of Broad-Spectrum Viral Vaccines” by Professor Leo Poon

Professor Poon showed the progress in the development of broad-spectrum and next-generation viral vaccines, highlighting innovative approaches aimed at inducing cross-protective and durable immunity. His lecture addressed key challenges in vaccine design, delivery, and global applicability for emerging viral threats.

The lecture concluded with a lively Q&A session, reflecting strong interest and engagement from both onsite and online participants. HKJCGHI extends its sincere thanks to the Co-Directors and all attendees for contributing to a stimulating and insightful exchange. The Institute looks forward to continuing these dialogues and fostering collaboration in advancing global health research and pandemic preparedness.
